McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer is issuing a warning about an extremely toxic shipment of fentanyl-laced drugs brought into Kane and the bordering Elk County areas.

It comes after the county detective bureau received credible information about the drugs, which could lead to overdose deaths.

Those addicted to drugs that are commonly laced with fentanyl are most at risk, according to the district attorney.

Fentanyl is a common addition to heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and other drugs and increases the chance of an overdose.

Vettenburg-Shaffer is calling it a health emergency and asking anyone who thinks they could have this drug to contact the county detectives by calling 814-887-3312 or 911.

An officer will come retrieve the substance, and the caller will not be charged with possession of a controlled substance if it is voluntarily reported, according to the district attorney.
