The Warren County Commissioners approved the 2025 budget during their public meeting December 18th, with several key changes that will affect local taxpayers.

Commissioner Ken Klakamp described the decision as a difficult one, noting that discussions surrounding the budget have been ongoing since June. While efforts have been made to ease the financial burden on residents, Klakamp confirmed that Warren County will face a tax increase in 2025.

"Unfortunately, there will be a 1.25 tax increase, which is the maximum permitted," Klakamp stated. "It was a very tough decision. We have been looking at the budget since June and trying to do our best to save funds where possible."

Another significant change coming next year is the shift to a split tax billing system. Under this new structure, residents will receive their municipal taxes in March and their school district taxes in September, rather than the previous system of a single lump-sum payment in September.

"We hope that split taxes will help reduce some of the strain on taxpayers," Commissioner Klakamp said. "So, they will not have to pay a large lump sum."

In addition to the changes in tax billing, the commissioners are reviewing employee benefits and plan to meet with employee unions in July 2025. These steps are part of the county's ongoing effort to reduce financial strain while addressing the needs of its employees and taxpayers.

"We’re doing everything we can to be transparent and have been talking to everyone in the courthouse.  We are trying to lessen the strain on taxpayers while maintaining necessary services," Klakamp said. "It’s been a challenging process."

Despite the county's efforts to minimize the impact on taxpayers, residents can expect higher taxes for the coming year. The commissioners emphasized that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and explore additional measures to help alleviate financial pressures.

The tax changes and budget adjustments mark a significant shift for Warren County, and residents can expect further updates as plans develop.
