Visiting Mickle's Barn is a December Tradition in Linesville: The Last Word
Many people were disappointed when bad weather forced the cancellation of this year's Festival of Trees at Erie's Bayfront Convention Center. For all who are disappointed for missing this year's Erie Festival of Trees, I want you to come along with me. We're heading to Crawford County!
We've arrived at Mickle's Barn in Linesville. Inside this barn are 29 beautifully decorated Christmas trees. This is the 12th year for the Mickle's Barn Holiday Display. It's become a December tradition in Linesville.
"It definitely continues to grow every single year as we improve the barn and we find every little nook and cranny to put more trees in,” says Kelly Mickle, who owns and operates the barn with her husband Steve.
The trees are decorated by local families and businesses. Everyone went all out this year. The Dendis family decorated an "Ugly Sweater" tree. Conneaut Lake Childcare submitted a cute tree. Each ornament has a picture of one of the children that attends the preschool center. Orthodontist Doug Smith decorated his tree with tooth ornaments and a famous abominable snow monster on top.
"It's amazing how creative people can be,” says Kelly. “We look forward to it just as much as anyone else to see what they come up with every single year."
There's a tree that's a tribute to Miss Stewart, a beloved elementary school teacher who died this past year. There's a tree saluting Linesville High School. The Pymatuning Spillway Concession Stand has a tree with ornaments that include ducks and fish. A tree decorated by the Active Aging Family Center has ornaments that were hand sewn by the center's clients. The VFW tree has a patriotic theme. Visitors get to vote for their favorite tree just as they do at the Festival of Trees in Erie.
"When they walk in the door they get two tickets and then they can vote for whatever trees they want,” says Steve. “At the end, we'll count up all the votes."
There's no admission charge for visitors. The Mickle's get nothing for their hard work organizing the event except the great feeling of spreading Christmas joy in Linesville.
"I enjoy coming down to the barn and seeing it when it's all decorated,” says Steve. “It is a lot of work to prepare and it gets a little stressful at times. But you know, when it's done and you're up here looking at this...it's worth it."
Mickle's Barn is located at 124 Stratton Avenue in Linesville. It will be open for one more day...Christmas Eve.. From 1 to 5 pm. The display also includes a Christmas village, a kids corner, and Christmas relics including ornaments, toys, games, and records.
