People will still be hitting the roads or skies over the next few days after Christmas.

AAA predicts to close out the year with record breaking travel numbers. They believe that 119 million people will travel 50 miles or more over the next week.

According to Lynda Lambert, a spokesperson with AAA, "Any days between tomorrow and New Year's Eve, you want to make sure you get up and get out early like before 11 am or wait until later in the day until afternoon rush hour."

Lambert said the best days to travel are on the holidays themselves, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.

The weather forecast is clear for now, but if that changes and things turn dicey, Lambert recommends building in extra time to travel. "Make sure you allow yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination. You don't want to speed because the faster you go, the less control you have when you need to maneuver or come to a stop or turn", said Lambert.

She also advised to never use cruise control on slick surfaces and to leave room between vehicles.

Gas prices are at their lowest for the first time in years, which is why Lambert said more people could be on the highways. "The gas prices do impact people's travel plans. This year our average today is $3.04 and that's 8-10 cents less than it was this time last year, so if you are driving long distance you will be saving a little money this year", explained Lambert.
