PennDOT Prepares to Implement Interstate Vehicle Restrictions
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is planning to implement temporary restrictions on Interstate 86 and Interstate 90 in Erie County in anticipation of lake-effect snow.
Vehicle restrictions reflecting Tier 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan will be in effect on the following roadways starting at 6:00 AM on January 1:
· Interstate 86 from the New York state line to the I-90 interchange.
· Interstate 90 from the New York state line to the Ohio state line.
Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
· Tractors without trailers.
· Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
· Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
· Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
· Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
· Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
· School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
· Motorcycles.
Additionally, the speed limit will be reduced to 45 miles per hour for all vehicles on I-86 and I-90 with commercial vehicles in the right lane only, also starting at 6:00 AM on January 1.
