As the holiday season comes to a close, many are facing more than just post-festivity fatigue. Dr. Mike Knoll, D.O., with UPMC Hamot, explains the common illnesses currently making their way through the region.

"I work at several hospitals, and we've seen an uptick in people coming in with general symptoms like fever, chills, cough, congestion, and in some cases, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea," said Dr. Knoll.

While a variety of illnesses are circulating, Dr. Knoll noted a surprising shift in COVID-19 symptoms compared to last year.

"We're seeing some flu cases and a handful of COVID cases, but the COVID symptoms have been different this year. I haven't seen as many respiratory issues with COVID, but I am seeing more cases where people are weak, ill and struggling to do the things they normally would."
