In anticipation for bands of Lake Effect snow and windy conditions starting early Tuesday morning, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is planning to implement temporary restrictions on certain vehicles on Interstate 86 and Interstate 90 in Erie County.

Vehicle restrictions reflecting Tier 1 of the commonwealth's weather event vehicle restriction plan will be in effect on the following roadways starting at 12:01 a.m. on January 14:

  • Interstate 86 from the New York state line to the I-90 interchange.
  • Interstate 90 from Exit 3 (Route 6N, West Springfield/Cherry Hill) to Exit 45 (Route 20, North East).
    • Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
      • Tractors without trailers.
    • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
    • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
    • Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
    • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
    • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
    • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
    • Motorcycles.

PennDOT says the purpose of the restrictions is to help ensure the interstates remain open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm.

When conditions improve, PennDOT will remove the travel restrictions.
